He is known to have produced hit songs in the past but why is he suddenly bringing them up now?
In a series of controversial social media posts, Nigerian music producer Samklef has been making waves by targeting several high-profile artists in the industry. The latest target of his ire appears to be singer Simi, as Samklef has made claims that he was sidelined by the songstress after they had worked together.
Samklef, whose real name is Samuel Oguachuba, is a talented music producer and artist signed to NONI RECORDS. Samklef gained prominence in the music industry for his work as a producer, notably producing a significant portion of Wizkid’s highly acclaimed album “Superstar,” which contributed significantly to the album’s success.
Also, Simi’s debut studio album Ogaju, which consisted of a variety of songs such as “Iya Temi” and “Ara Ile” was produced entirely by Samklef. He is known to have produced hit songs in the past but why is he suddenly bringing them up now?
Samklef took to Twitter (now known as X) to share an old throwback photo of Simi, accompanied by a caption that suggested she had chosen to pursue her career independently, leaving him behind. This post was met with significant backlash from Simi’s fans, who accused Samklef of being disrespectful towards the “Duduke” hitmaker.
This is not the first time Samklef has stirred up controversy on social media. In the past, he has also targeted other prominent artists, including Davido and Wizkid. Samklef has been vocal about his perceived role in the reunion of the two superstars, claiming that he told Wizkid to “hang out” with Davido, which led to their reconciliation. Remember that two musicians were seen vibing together at an event in December 2023.
Furthermore, Samklef has not shied away from criticizing Davido. While he praised Wizkid, calling him “the original 001” and “every artist’s role model”, he also criticized Davido for reneging on contracts and being arrogant, telling him to learn from Wizkid. As time went by, he later wrote in a tweet that he had forgiven Davido, referring to him as his “junior in the music industry“.
The producer also claimed that he and Wizkid started Afrobeat in 2010. Samklef stated that Nigerian contemporary music had no genre until he and Wizkid created Afrobeat and that Wizkid named the music genre Afrobeat.
His claim is not entirely accurate, While he and Wizkid may have played a significant role in popularizing and contributing to the contemporary Afrobeat sound, the genre itself has deeper roots in Nigerian music history. Afrobeat, as a genre, was originally pioneered by Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti in the late 1960s and 1970s. Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat was a fusion of traditional Nigerian music, jazz, highlife, and funk, characterized by its political themes and complex musical arrangements.
The latest incident with Simi has only added fuel to the fire, as Samklef’s actions suggest a desire to claim credit for the success of others. By bringing up his past work with Simi, implying that she sidelined him, and by saying that he started Afrobeat, Samklef appears to be seeking recognition and validation for his contributions to the industry.
However, the backlash from fans and the general public has been swift, with many calling out Samklef’s behavior as disrespectful and attention-seeking. As the music industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether Samklef’s tactics will ultimately work in his favor or if he will face further consequences for his actions.
