Still, despite its anticipation, the film has faced a barrage of criticisms from various quarters.
The recently released movie “Water & Garri” by Tiwa Savage has sparked a wave of reactions and critiques from both audiences and critics.
“Water & Garri” is a romantic film directed by Meji Alabi and starring Tiwa Savage, Jemima Osunde, Mike Afolarin, and Andrew Bunting. The movie follows Aisha, played by Tiwa Savage, a successful fashion designer who returns to Nigeria after living in the United States for a decade.
Upon her return, Aisha is confronted with profound changes that have occurred in her homeland and among the people she once knew. The film explores themes of love, betrayal, grief, and cultural shifts, drawing inspiration from Tiwa Savage’s personal experiences and her 2021 EP of the same name.
Still, despite its anticipation, the film has faced a barrage of criticisms from various quarters. Critics have not held back in expressing their opinions, with some giving scathing reviews, questioning the creative choices made in the production.
Daniel Regha, a controversial Nigerian Twitter/X personality renowned for his candid and critical commentary on a range of topics, gave the Water and Garri movie a harsh 1.5/10. In his critical analysis, he said that the film was dull to watch, had a convoluted plot, had unsatisfactory dialogue, and the lead actor’s acting was subpar.
Daniel even went so far as to analyze each and every error made in the film, including the scene where the Okada gang appears and the fact that Tiwa smokes while wearing a nightgown and bonnet cap but does not sleep in the bonnet cap. Furthermore, he asserted that he did not understand the moral lesson of the story.
Even though it appears that the water and garri movie can only receive the lowest rating of 1.5 out of 10, things get worse. The movie received a terrible 1/10 from “Nigeria Movie review” on Twitter X, which described it as “very flat and bland and boring.” The X account clarified that it felt as though there was no story at all and that the story lacked context.
To elaborate, a Nigerian movie reviewer stated that the film experienced a severe case of identity crisis. The actors in the film Water and Garri spoke with a Ghanaian accent, which was a reflection of the fact that the film was shot in Cape Coast. Despite their occasional use of Yoruba, the Ghanian accent lessened the sense of a Nigerian community in the film than it had promised.
Nevertheless, despite the negative reviews the film received, reviewers could not help but give the “Water and Garri” soundtrack album high marks.
The song “Water and Garri ft Richard Bona and The Cavemen” is currently topping the chart (at No. 1) in Chad, and Daniel Regha gave the soundtrack a strong 8 out of 10.
Despite the harsh critiques, the accompanying soundtrack of the movie has garnered praise, showcasing a diverse range of musical elements and collaborations. This divergence in reception highlights the complexity of creating a successful cinematic experience that resonates with viewers on multiple levels.
