An international search that lasted for fifty-one years resulted in the recovery and return of a Hofner bass guitar that had been stolen from Paul McCartney and had been used to record the first two albums ever released by The Beatles.
The guitar, which was used in singles by the Beatles, including the 1963 successes “She Loves You” and “All My Loving,” was referred to as the “most iconic lost musical instrument of all time” by the team that was responsible for the hunt, which was known as The missing Bass Project.

“It’s the bass that started Beatlemania,” Nick Wass, one of the founders of the search team, said in an interview with Reuters.
“That’s why it’s important, it’s the one that got it going.”
In the previous year, the project made a public plea that was distributed all around the world.
“As a result of the publicity someone living in a terraced house in Hastings on the south coast of England contacted Paul McCartney’s company and then returned the bass to them,” the organization said in a statement. Although the instrument was returned the previous year, the news of this fact was not disclosed until Thursday.
According to the search team, the instrument was taken from a vehicle in the Notting Hill neighborhood of London in October 1972. Additionally, the search team cited information that they obtained during their research.
According to a statement made by a spokeswoman on Paul McCartney’s website, “The guitar has been authenticated by Hofner, and Paul is extremely grateful to all those involved.”
In an interview with Reuters, Wass stated that the bass guitar was “somewhat damaged” due to the presence of a crack in the neck, a damaged bridge that would require replacement, and pickups that were no longer functional.
“But they can be sorted out, the neck can be repaired and we can make it playable again,” according to Wass.
At an auction held in Beverly Hills, California, in 2015, a guitar that had been stolen from the late John Lennon in the 1960s was sold for a total of $2.41 million on the market. According to the individual who is currently in possession of it, he initially purchased it without being aware of its link to John Lennon.
