We don’t endorse the ‘new year, new me’ motto or placing pressure on yourself to change your lifestyle just because a new year has started, but there’s no harm in making little, beneficial adjustments. Many people use the start of a new year to tidy and assess their clothing needs. It’s a good time to decide what to keep and what to leave.

We all make bad wardrobe decisions, from keeping old things we never wear to panic-buying items we’ll never wear. It doesn’t have to be.
To save space, save money, and look your best, here are 15 wardrobe resolutions to make now.
1. Avoid one-time purchases.
Each of us is culpable. A wedding, birthday celebration, or Friday night friend reunion supper. When going somewhere exciting, we want to wear something fresh and special. Even though we like the piece we buy, it rarely gets more than one excursion.
Instead of buying particular event clothes, strive to have a few adaptable dressier options. You can wear something basic and classic again if you choose it above a trend. Smartly accessorized, it never looks the same.
2. Don’t buy or keep unfit items
It’s normal to save outgrown clothes in hopes of fitting again. It’s also normal to buy something too tiny to reduce weight or because it’s on sale and they don’t have your size. However, keeping these products you can’t wear is one of the worst things you can do to downsize your wardrobe. Be realistic and self-aware. If it’s not comfortable, sell or donate it.
3. Don’t buy or keep unsuitable items
Many people maintain things they know don’t fit and don’t fit. We’ve bought things on a whim because they’re trendy or because someone else wore them and looked great, but they don’t fit us, so we never wear them. Clothing that doesn’t make you feel confident and comfortable isn’t for you.
4. Don’t buy things cheaply. It’s tempting to take advantage of substantial discounts, especially on premium designer pieces, but only if you truly need them. Always think twice before buying a deal. No matter how cheap, it’s a waste if you never wear it.
5. Buy something, sell something.
To keep your clothing manageable, use the one-in, one-out rule: when you buy anything new, take something out (and sell or donate it). It will prevent your rails and shelves from overflowing and make you more confident in your purchases. Never buy something until you adore it, knowing you’ll lose something great from your wardrobe.
6. Swap clothes with your chicest friends
Swapping clothes with pals keeps your closet fresh. Use your one-in, one-out policy to trade in something you haven’t worn in months for something your friend has grown weary of wearing but you’ve always wanted. Trading clothes can provide you an exciting wardrobe without spending money or harming the environment, whether you host a big party or just make a deal with one buddy.
7. Avoid costly shopping trips.
Style ruts can leave us feeling like we loathe everything in our wardrobes and have nothing to wear. Usually, we embark on a major buying spree and spend a lot of money on trend-led goods that end up in our wardrobes forever, never used. Do not let this happen. Instead, look for pieces you adore year-round and note what you’re missing when you realize it. Instead of starting over every few months, view it as an ongoing process. Allowing oneself to buy one nice piece sometimes rather than two large shopping sprees a year may lead to wiser judgments and a more fashionable wardrobe.
8. Explore new brands
We slip into style ruts because we are tied to and comfortable with specific shops. It’s fantastic to have your go-to brands that last, but there are always new, amazing companies to discover. Explore high-end designer labels and mid-range companies year-round. You’ll find unique, fashionable items that no one else has.
9. Make tough choices
No one likes trash. Getting rid of clothes can be hard since it implies letting go of memories. You don’t need to save everything you’ve loved, especially if you haven’t worn it in decades. Try something you can’t part with and see how often you wear it in six months. Without a trip, it’s time to go.
10. Uniformize
One fashion myth is that you should never buy something comparable to what you already have. Nobody wants a wardrobe of 15 navy blue jumpers and 10 similar black skinny pants. Use your expertise of what works for you. All the most stylish women in the world have a uniform: they keep it simple, know what they look well in, and adhere to it when buying new clothes.
11. Master your clothing
It seems apparent, but it’s easy to forget what’s in our wardrobes, and many of us have beautiful clothes that haven’t been worn in years or forgotten during lockdown. Before buying something new, know what you currently have in your closet. Decluttering will let you see what’s in there and avoid buying unnecessary items.
12. Invest in your assets
Many of us toss away damaged pieces, but just because something is worn does not mean it should be thrown away. Be sure to choose a good seamstress and shoe and handbag restoration companies in your neighborhood to repair your clothes. Better to invest a little to fix things than to keep buying them.
13. Wear rentals.
Due to increased environmental awareness, fashion-rental companies have proliferated, making it easier than ever to rent clothes. Renting instead of buying is a terrific method to upgrade your wardrobe for many reasons. Firstly, you can often feel like you’re wearing something new, which is wonderful for important occasions like weddings or parties where you may have bought a one-occasion outfit. You can be more experimental with what you try, and you may find amazing stuff you were reluctant to buy.
14. Use the hanger method to determine a piece’s wearability.
Hangers should face the same way at the start of the season. Wear each garment and turn the hanger around. What you wear and don’t will change swiftly this season. Vestiaire Collective co-founder Fanny Moizant swears by this hanger technique and says women only wear 40 to 60% of their clothes. See more of her wardrobe detox recommendations here.
15. Capsule wardrobes are powerful.
You don’t need a tremendous budget or three walk-in wardrobes of expensive goods to look attractive. You need to make smart choices.
Buy what you need, what makes you happy, and nothing more. Care for your garments. Do it in 15 pieces. Consider the space you’ll save.
