Although we wouldn’t advise adopting the ‘new year, new me’ attitude or forcing yourself to change your entire lifestyle simply because a new year has begun, there is no harm in implementing modest but meaningful improvements to your life. The beginning of a new year may be a wonderful time for many people to simplify their lives and determine what they truly need, especially in terms of clothing. It’s the ideal time, in many respects, to decide what should remain and what should go.

We are all guilty of making less-than-sensible clothing selections, from hoarding old clothes that are never worn to buying items in a panic that won’t be worn more than once. That need not be the case, though.
We’ve broken down 15 wardrobe resolutions you can start implementing right now to free up space, cut costs, and look your best.
1. Don’t buy something for just one occasion
All of us are guilty of it. A birthday celebration, a wedding, or a Friday-night get-together dinner with your pals. We always feel the urge to wear something exceptional, and consequently something new, when we are going somewhere interesting. Even if we may really love the item we purchase, it rarely gets used more than once.
Rather than buying something special for each occasion, aim to have a few more dressy, multipurpose items in your closet. You can wear it again and again if you choose something basic and timeless rather than trendy. When smartly accessorized, it will never seem the same.
2. Avoid purchasing or holding onto items that don’t fit.
It’s normal to hang onto things that don’t fit you anymore in the hopes that they will eventually. Purchasing an item in a size too small as a weight loss incentive or because it’s on sale and doesn’t fit your typical size is also a common occurrence. But if you’re attempting to cut down on the size of your wardrobe, one of the worst things you can do is hang onto these things that you can’t wear. Be sincere and reasonable with yourself. It is time to sell or donate if it no longer fits you.
3. Don’t buy or keep something that doesn’t suit you
Many of us maintain items that we know don’t fit us in addition to clinging onto things that don’t fit. We frequently buy items on the spur of the moment because they’re in style or because we think someone else looks great in them, but we never wear them because they just don’t fit us. A item of clothing has no place in your life if it doesn’t give you a sense of ease and confidence.
4. Don’t buy something just because it’s a bargain
It’s simple to be seduced by a large discount, and you should take advantage of significant price reductions, particularly on designer pieces that are investments, but only if those pieces are truly necessities for your collection. Never purchase something simply because it’s on sale. No matter how cheap it was, it’s a total waste of money if you never wear it.
5. Get rid of something when you purchase something.
Adopting the one-in, one-out principle is a great strategy to maintain a reasonable size wardrobe: for each item you add, take one out (and either sell it or donate it to a worthy cause). It will not only prevent your rails and shelves from becoming overstocked, but it also requires you to have far greater faith in the products you are buying. Knowing that you would be losing something wonderful from your wardrobe, you will never purchase something until you absolutely adore it.
6. Clothes swap with your most stylish friends
Trading items with friends is a terrific way to keep your wardrobe feeling new. Follow your one-in, one-out rule by trading in an item that you haven’t worn in months for something your friend has become tired of wearing but that you have always eyed. Trade clothing for an interesting wardrobe without breaking the bank or adding to environmental damage, whether you organize large-scale clothes-swap parties or just make a deal with a single acquaintance.
7. Don’t go on extravagant shopping sprees
We frequently find ourselves in fashion ruts, feeling as though we own nothing to wear and detest everything in our closets. When this occurs, we typically go on massive shopping binges and spend astronomical sums of money on precisely these in-style products that wind up taking up all of our wardrobe space and never getting used. Keep it from getting this bad. Rather, search throughout the year for items that you adore and, upon realizing what you are missing, note it. Rather than starting over every few months, consider it as an ongoing, evolving process. Rather than going on two massive shopping sprees a year, allow yourself to treat yourself to one really lovely piece every now and then. This will probably lead to far more thoughtful purchases and, ultimately, a much more attractive wardrobe.
8. Make an effort to discover new brands
We also get wedded to and at ease in specific stores, which contributes to our stylistic ruts. Although it’s wonderful to have a few staple brands that you know and trust, there are constantly terrific new products on the market that are just waiting to be found. Explore all year long, from more economical mid-range brands to upscale designer names. You’ll come away with some genuinely unique, fashionable finds (that, bonus, no one else has).
9. Make some difficult choices
No one enjoys discarding items. Giving up an item of clothing might occasionally entail letting go of memories, which can be quite difficult. But if it’s something you haven’t worn in decades, there’s no reason to hang onto everything you’ve ever liked. If you’re having a hard time parting with anything, give it a try and track how many times you wear it over the course of the following six months. It is officially time to part with it if it is not used.
10. Make an outfit
A common misperception about style is that you should never purchase items that are identical to what you already own. Of course, no one wants to own a whole wardrobe made up of just ten pairs of black skinny jeans and fifteen similar navy blue jumpers. But don’t be scared to utilize your understanding of what works best for you to the fullest. The world’s most fashionable ladies all have their own uniforms; they keep things basic, are aware of what suits them well, and adhere to this guideline while selecting new outfits.
11. Know your wardrobe inside out
It may seem apparent, but it’s easy to forget what’s within our closets. For many of us, there are excellent pieces inside that have been neglected during lockdown or that haven’t been worn in years. Thus, make sure you have a very clear notion of what already belongs in your wardrobe before making any purchases. Decluttering and having a clear-out will help you know what’s in there and save you from buying unnecessary items by accident.
12. Invest in what you already own
It is a common mistake for many of us to reject items as soon as they become damaged, but just because something shows signs of wear doesn’t mean it has to be thrown away. Invest in the items you currently own in your closet by learning where to find local repair services, such as a fantastic seamstress or businesses that restore shoes and handbags. Investing a small amount of money to have items fixed is preferable to repeatedly purchasing the same item.
13. Embrace rental fashion
The number of fashion rental companies has increased dramatically, making it easier than ever to rent items. This is mostly due to increased awareness about sustainability. For a variety of reasons, renting rather than buying is a terrific method to upgrade your wardrobe. First of all, you often get the impression that you are wearing something fresh, which is wonderful for big events like parties or weddings where you may have previously purchased an item of clothing for that one time only. Another benefit is that you can experiment a little more and discover amazing pieces that you would have been too scared to purchase by stepping outside of your comfort zone.
14. Use the hanger method if you’re not sure if a garment is wearable.
Make sure all of your hangers point in the same direction at the start of the season. Make sure you flip the hanger the other way after every wear. You’ll immediately see what to wear and what not to wear throughout the season. Fanny Moizant, a co-founder of Vestiaire Collective, claims that women often only wear 40 to 60 percent of their wardrobe. She uses this hanger trick religiously.
15. Never undervalue the influence of a capsule wardrobe
You don’t need a lot of clothing to appear attractive; being truly trendy doesn’t require a large budget or three walk-in wardrobes’ worth of brand items. Making wise judgments is what you do require, though.
Purchase only what you absolutely need, what makes you happy, and nothing more. Additionally, take care of your clothing. Doing it in fifteen chunks is doable. Imagine the space you will save.
