A provisional agreement on major artificial intelligence laws was adopted by two key groups of MPs at the European Parliament on Tuesday. This agreement comes ahead of a vote by the parliamentary assembly in April, which will clear the way for the first legislation in the world to be enacted regarding the technology.

These new regulations, which are being referred to as the Artificial Intelligence Act, are intended to establish guidelines for a technology that is utilized in a wide variety of businesses, including banking, automobiles, electronic items, and airplanes, as well as for the purposes of law enforcement and security.
The guidelines will also control foundation models or generative artificial intelligence, such as the one that was developed by OpenAI, which is supported by Microsoft. These are AI systems that have been trained on enormous data sets and have the potential to learn from fresh data in order to do a variety of jobs.
The interim agreement on an Artificial Intelligence Act that assures safety and complies with fundamental rights has been adopted by members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in the European Parliament (EP) Justice and Single Market committees, according to a statement made by one of the two committees of the European Parliament (EP) on X.
Following France’s successful negotiation of concessions to reduce the administrative burden on high-risk artificial intelligence systems and to improve the security of commercial secrets, the countries of the European Union (EU) provided their support earlier this month.
On the other hand, Big Tech remained cautious, since they were concerned about the ambiguous and general language used in some of the regulations, as well as the effect that the law would have on innovation.
