Breathtaking Videos from 2024 Ojude Ọbá Festival

The event is a powerful expression of the Ijebu people’s identity, unity, and pride in their rich history.

The Ojude Oba festival, a vibrant celebration held annually by the Ijebu people in Nigeria, is renowned for its grandeur and festive atmosphere. The 2024 festival, held on June 18, was no exception, showcasing the rich heritage, unity, and cultural pride of the Ijebu community.

Meaning “The King’s Court” or “The King’s Gathering,” Ojude Oba takes place in Ijebu Ode, the historic capital of the Ijebu Kingdom. The festival dates back over a century when the first Muslim converts visited the Awujale, the paramount ruler of Ijebuland, to express their gratitude and pray for his long life, good health, and the prosperity of Ijebuland and Nigeria.

The 2024 celebration, themed “Ojude Oba: Unity and Harmony, Our Gift,” was overseen by Oba Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, who has revitalized the festival into a globally recognized event. Attendees included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Minister of Culture, Art and the Creative Economy Hannatu Musa-Musawa.

A key feature of the festival is the regberegbe, organized age groups within the Ijebu community, each with distinct names and costumes. These groups, comprising both men and women, parade before the king in elaborate attire. Highlights also include the parade of the Baloguns and Eleshins, descendants of war heroes, who display their horse-riding skills in a mock battle show.

The festival attracts over a million spectators, including tourists, government officials, business leaders, and traditional titleholders, significantly boosting local businesses and promoting cultural tourism in Ogun State. Plans are underway to gain UNESCO support for the festival, emphasizing its cultural significance.

Ojude Oba fosters unity and community spirit, preserving the Ijebu culture and celebrating their heritage and achievements. The event is a powerful expression of the Ijebu people’s identity, unity, and pride in their rich history.
